The worlds sixth largest desert and origin for many ancient tales and stories. Here you can travel in the footsteps of the caravans of the Silk road, or just marvel at the beauty of nature. And night this is one of the best places, on earth, to view the milky way with all it´s stars.
This is the most well attended multi-day-tour in our program.
During this seven day tour you will experience the hot climate and the fascinating ecology of this vast desert - that stretches all the way to the Himalayas. A favorite for many of our travelers are the "singing" dunes at Hongoryn Els.
1. Ulaanbaatar - Tsagaan Suvraga (White Cliff)
We start driving south. On the way we visit Tsagaan Suvraga (White Cliff). A famous rock formation, that looking at it from afar look like the ruins of an ancient city. Up close we can admire the imaginative rock formations that have been shaped by the sandy winds over millennia. We stay overnight in a ger/yurt.
Day 2. Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs)
These red sand cliffs are today better know as "flaming cliffs". Located about 100 km at the northwest of Dalanzadgad. Bayanzag means "rich in saxual". This thorny shrub proliferates in the surroundings and is a good source of food for camels. The area is also well known, world wide, for the many dinosaur fossils found here, due to the sedimentary sand cliffs. We spend the night in a ger/yurt tourist camp.
Day 3-4. Khongoryn Els
We continue to some of the largest and most spectacular sand dunes in Mongolia. Also know as the Duut Mankhan (Singing Dunes). The sound made from sand moved by the wind. They reach up to 300 m in high, 12 km wide and about 150km long. The dunes stretch all the way to the Altai Mountains, nearly 180 kilometers away. Travel through the desert is by van or jeep. Second day you will ride camels and climb the sand dunes. The view (and photos) on top of the dunes is a memory for life. By night we stay in ger/yurt.
Day 5. Yoliin Am (Valley of Vultures)
Yoliin Am is a strictly protected area since 1965 and it is located within Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park. Famous for a deep ice field in narrow canyons, frozen summer stream and wild life such as bearded vultures, wild Argali sheep, ibex, and snow leopard. The stream remains frozen even in July, the hottest month of the year. We visit a natural museum of the Gobi Three Beauties National Park, take time to explore the nature and view the picturesque Bearded Eagle Canyon. If you are interested a long hike, we can make arrangements with an experienced driver to pick you up on the other side of the gorge, roughly 8 km away. We stay overnight in a ger/yurt.
Day 6. Baga Gazriin Chuluu
We drive south towards Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a 15 km long and 10 km wide granite stone-mountain, elevated 1768 m above sea level. The surroundings are well know by locals as a place where many different kind of medical herbs can be found. In the Bolort cave old rock images, petroglyphs and burial mounds are found. We visit a temple ruin used by Buddhist monks. We stay overnight in ger/yurt.
Day 7. Drive back to Ulaanbaatar
We continue north and at late evening we drop you off at your guesthouse or hotell.
